We as humans try to humanise God and make Him into something that He is not, and in doing so we make up a god or gods in our minds and then fail to get the correct understanding as to who our Maker really is.
Since the fall of man, and throughout civilisations of antiquity, man has made the Divine into something that He is not. They have invented different gods - sometimes depicted by nature or aspects thereof - they have sometimes depicted Him as female, even lowering God into the form of animals or a mix of animal and human form and they have worshiped these.
This is why we need checks and balances that have been revealed to us in scripture, via revelation from Him.
We will take look at some keywords that you may be familiar or unfamiliar with. God willing this will help our understanding.
- Modalism:
- Polytheism:
- Monotheism:
- Subordinationism
- Equality
- Persons
Modalism: Is the belief that God is one who takes turns in manifesting Himself into the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, but only in one roll at a time. The three never exist at the same time. In other words like an actor who plays multiple characters in a show but who can only play one roll at a time. The three characters are therefore never on the stage together at the same time. This is a incorrect understanding of the Godhead.
Polytheism: is the belief in that there are many gods. for example the religion of Hinduism.
Monotheism: is the belief in that there is only one God. Religious groups like Islam, Judaism and Christianity but excluding some Christian cults.
Subordinationism: Is the belief in a hierarchy of position of power and authority. First place is the Father then the Son and lastly the Spirit. This too is erroneous. The three Persons of the Godhead are co-equal.
Equality: This term refers to the three persons of the Godhead, namely the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit, being the same in power, rank and authority and are all co-equals.
Persons: I like to think of it in this context. Regarding the Godhead - that each person is a character and each person is unique in their own right from the other.
